Who doesn’t want a new vehicle? New cars look great, come loaded with tons of new features and even smell good. However, new cars are also significantly more expensive than used and dramatically drop in value the moment you drive them off the lot. It’s for this reason, and more, that many buyers are turning to previously owned vehicles for their next purchase.

When you move past the new car ‘look and feel’, the most attractive aspect for buyers is usually the amenities and updated tech. However, much of the technology options in new vehicles can be found in recent model years that are considered used. Amenities move from ‘available’ to standard as tech becomes more common, but the higher trim models that featured these options a few years ago are cheaper than the standard trims being sold today as brand new. This means that you can get the same great amenities that you are interested in on a vehicle that is just slightly older than a current model and probably features other upgraded options as well.

Aside from available features, there are other compelling reasons to buy used. New vehicle prices are increasing with each model year, but the loan amounts being financed by lenders aren’t. This translates to less purchasing power for potential buyers, forcing many of them to settle for fewer features and overall less satisfying vehicles.

The used vehicle market has made several strides in the last decade or two, in a bid to increase the popularity of used vehicles with drivers. Most manufacturers have a ‘certified pre-owned’ certification program for their vehicles, which allows for vehicle warranties to be extended if they meet certain qualifications and inspection standards. Dealers are familiar with these programs and will showcase certified pre-owned vehicles for sale.

If you are in the market for a vehicle, consider buying pre-owned. The benefits are numerous and the end result will likely be far more satisfying, and affordable, than buying new.
